Callian & Montauroux

Callian

Callian, 8km east of Fayence, looks down upon the plains between the Massif de l’Esterel to the south and the Pré-Alpes to the north. The characteristic narrow, steep, flowery lanes twist around the medieval chateau that dominates the Callian skyline. It has a small, tree-shaded square, an unusual old fountain, attractively floodlit at night, and a 17th century church with spire of patterened, glazed tiles. Art exhibitions are frequently held in the old Chapelle des Penitents in the heart of the village.

Montauroux

Montauroux is often described as the gateway to the Var department and is a pleasant hilltop village close to the Lac de St. Cassien. It is an historic village that was built around a fortress, largely destroyed during the religious wars and was the scene of a battle between Henry VI and the Duc de Savoie in 1592. There are remnants of a Roman aqueduct and the village is also endowed with interesting church, chapels, and houses of the 18th Century.

This south facing village rises in altitudes from 150m to 400m, boasts an exceptional amount of sunshine (280 sunny days each year), and is surrounded by oak and pine woods that form a unique natural environment. Christian Dior was so taken with Montauroux that he chose the Chateau de la Colle as his summer residence. The chapel of St. Bartholemy is a legacy from Christian Dior to the community
